Student Dress Standard

K-8 Language Academy Dress Code

Students should dress to allow for participation in ALL activities, including physical education and recess. Our dress code is based on safety and allowing a learner to participate in school fully and is considered appropriate for a K-8 learning environment.  All students are expected to be neat and clean and to wear appropriate apparel in a K-8 setting. Students are expected to come to school wearing appropriate clothing that promotes learning and professionalism. 


We are dressed for success. Two of the Character Strengths we considered when reviewing and updating our Dress Code were Poise and Confidence. We know children express themselves in what they wear, but we also want to maintain professionalism in what we wear here at school. Parents will be contacted and asked to bring a change of clothing if a learner is wearing garments that may impede the learner's ability to engage in school activities fully. 


Please keep the following in mind when selecting school clothes for your child. 


  • For safety, select supportive footwear allowing learners to participate fully in their physical education classes. General clothing standards for all children require that closed-toed shoes be worn at all times. Sneaker-type shoes must be worn for P.E. (Crocs, high heels, and flip-flops are inappropriate in the school setting). We will call families to come and bring a change of shoes. 
  • Tops/shirts must cover the upper body, including the belly button and back. Shirt straps need to be at least 1 inch thick. Spaghetti straps or strapless tops are not acceptable. 
  • No Sagging pants if your undergarments are exposed you will be asked pull up your pants.
  • Mesh shirts are allowed as long as the shirt underneath covers the upper body, including the belly button and back, and meets dress code standards.
  • Shorts should be no shorter than four inches from the inner thigh. 
  • Hats are allowed. If hats become a distraction, they will be taken away and returned at the end of the day. 
  • Avoid clothes with dangly straps that might get caught in play equipment. Bib overalls may be worn as long as the straps are fastened.
  • Clothing with slogans that endorse tobacco, drugs, weapons, alcohol, demeaning or visually derogatory statements are not allowed at school. Anything considered affiliated with gangs, like bandanas or colors representing a particular type of gang, is not allowed. 
  • No images or language such as hate speech or profanity. 
  • Pajamas, houseshoes, slides, crocs, or other nightwear may not be worn to school, unless it is worn for spirit week. 
  • Comfort clothing like sweats and joggers are allowed.
  • No blankets are allowed for any reason. They will be taken away and given back at the end of the day.
  • Toys are not allowed as they are a distraction in class. Teachers have discretion and may have them as a prize for students. The teacher will tell parents if they are doing a stuffed animal day. Any staff member may hold a student accountable for adherence to the dress code. Many of the above items can be hazardous when running and jumping on the blacktop and dirt playground.


Students dressed inappropriately will be asked to change. Students can cover or change inappropriate clothing. Parents will be contacted if a student does not have a change of clothes.  The parent/guardian will be called and asked to bring a more appropriate set of clothing. Should a parent/guardian not be accessible, the nurse’s or principal’s office has a limited supply of clean clothing that the student MUST wear. Please remember that we are trying to create an environment that promotes learning and professionalism while abiding by district guidelines.
